The magic is in the garden.

This family session was photographed in their own family gardens, among a collection of over a thousand roses! It was simply spectacular and tucked away like their own secret paradise. I also love that this location is uniquely special and meaningful to them.

What to Wear for Family Pictures

They chose a wardrobe of laidback, flowing, springy pieces to compliment the natural scenery. I adore this mama’s beautiful wardrobe. The muted, earthen colors and artistic, flowing wardrobe was a great style choice.

We actually did two sets of photos with two different of wardrobes in two different locations, lending to the great diversity of images you see featured here. I LOVE that Mama took the shoes off her toddler. Children need to be connected to the earth. They need to be barefoot and run outside. I will always encourage my clients to let their little ones be barefoot, if applicable!

When photographing toddlers, it is normal and natural for them to want to do their own thing. As a photographer, I try not to force children to do anything, but prefer to capture them organically. As a parent, you can help guide this process by interacting with your baby or toddler naturally, in an engaging, playful manner.

Photo Session with a Toddler

This gallery was photographed in the morning, around 9am or so on a peaceful Sunday morning. I typically try to photograph sessions at the Golden hour before sunset or after sunrise, but this session actually fell outside that window. You can see more direct sunlight, especially in the image below. One thing that helped was the abundance of natural shade in the area which gave us opportunities for more even lighting.

These images were photographed using the Canon EOS 60D, a 50mm 1.4 lens, and an 85mm 1.2 lens which I rented especially for this session. While I did ultimately purchase the 85mm lens, I have decided it is not my go-to lens, and prefer the 50mm moreso. All images were edited by hand using both Lightroom and Photoshop both.
