What to Wear for Photos

When dressing for family photos, it’s important to opt for neutral or earth-toned clothing choices. Good neutral colors include white, brown, black, and gray. Good earth-toned clothing choices include forest green, navy, burnt sienna, warm red. I love this mom’s green flowing dress, brown hat, and baby’s neutral white and khaki ensemble. This is a great palette for family photos in an outdoor location.

Another important tip is too accessorize! Accessories really take a photo from good too great. In this session, we utilized baby suspenders, a sun hat, and a flowing shawl to create a boho vibe that is more artistic and visually appealing.

Best time of Day for Photos

The best time of day for family photos in Mountain View is definitely golden hour. Golden hour is the hour after sunrise, or the hour before sunset. Golden hour light is soft and glowing. Photography sessions planned before sunset have the added bonus of capturing some beautiful sunset lighting. In the summer, sunset happens much later, so plan accordingly if you have a small child with a strict bedtime to work around. You may benefit from planning your family photo session in early Spring or late Fall when sunset is earlier and the portrait session will be starting earlier in the evening.

Best Locations near Mountain View, CA for Photos

The best location for a family photography session has a mixture of open space, such as a field or open path, with a mix of shady areas, provided by hills or trees. A mix of lighting scenarios allows us to have more versatility and flexibility while photographing your family photos.

I also try to pick locations that have convenient parking and an accessible photoshoot place. I prefer that my clients don’t have to walk more than about 10, maximum 15, minutes before reaching the photoshoot spot. I don’t want to tire my children out before I’ve even taking my first photo!

There are many locations throughout the SF Peninsula that meet this criteria. Cuesta Park, Shoreline Park, Gamble Gardens, Cactus Gardens, Arastradero Preserve, and Rancho San Antonio are all pretty, convenient locations for family photos in the Mountain View area.
